A Tradition Dating Back Centuries
Glassmaking in the Czech lands has a remarkably long history. Some of the oldest archaeological evidence of glass production in our region dates back to around the 13th century, with early glassmaking sites discovered in the Lusatian Mountains in northern Bohemia.
The surrounding forests provided an important source of wood for the furnaces, while the natural resources available in the region helped create ideal conditions for the development of the craft.
Over the centuries, Czech glassmakers continued to experiment, improve their techniques, and develop their own distinctive styles. Cutting, engraving, polishing, painting, and other decorative techniques gradually became increasingly sophisticated – eventually giving Bohemian glass the reputation it enjoys today.
And who knows how it all started… Our theory is that, back in medieval times, someone simply thought:
“We need something fancy to drink our beer from.” 😅🍺
Then, as Czech craftsmanship tends to do, things apparently got a little out of hand. They kept improving their skills, experimenting with new techniques and pushing the limits of what could be done with glass.
And we’re certainly not complaining about the result. 😁

Bohemian Glass Today
Today, Bohemian glass remains one of the most popular Czech souvenirs among visitors from around the world.
And understandably so.
Whether it is a beautifully decorated vase, a set of wine glasses, a crystal chandelier, a hand-cut bowl, or a small decorative piece, Bohemian glass can make a wonderful reminder of your time in the Czech Republic.
It can be something to display at home, something to use for a special occasion, or simply a very unique gift for someone special. ❤️
And there is something particularly nice about taking home an item that isn’t just a souvenir, but represents centuries of local craftsmanship and tradition.

Famous Czech Glassmakers
Several Czech glassmakers have become particularly famous both at home and internationally.
Moser
Founded in Karlovy Vary in 1857, Moser is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and luxurious Czech glass brands.
Its beautifully crafted, hand-cut and hand-decorated crystal has been associated with royalty, presidents, and distinguished guests from around the world.
If you’re visiting Karlovy Vary, the Moser Glass Museum and glassworks are well worth a visit – and, naturally, Moser is one of the highlights of our Karlovy Vary day trip. 😉
Rückl
Another legendary Czech glassmaker is Rückl, a family-owned company with a glassmaking tradition dating back to the 19th century.
Located in Nižbor, not far from Prague, Rückl is particularly known for its beautifully cut crystal and traditional craftsmanship.
It also happens to be a rather convenient stop if you’re traveling between Prague and Munich.
Rückl Glassworks is one of the optional stopovers we offer on our Prague to Munich or Munich to Prague transfer, allowing you to turn what would otherwise be a simple transfer into a little journey through Czech craftsmanship. 😉
Crystalex
And then there is Crystalex, one of the largest Czech producers of glassware and one of the names most closely associated with Czech glass production.
Based in Novy Bor, in northern Bohemia, Crystalex continues a long regional tradition of glassmaking and produces a wide range of everyday and decorative glassware.

More Than Just a Souvenir
Perhaps that’s what makes Bohemian glass so special.
It isn’t simply something beautiful you can buy in a Czech shop.
Behind every piece is a tradition that has been developing for centuries, passed from one generation of craftsmen to the next.
So, next time you are enjoying a glass of wine from a beautifully crafted crystal glass, take a closer look at it.
There is a good chance you’re holding a little piece of Bohemian history in your hand. 🇨🇿✨
And if you’re visiting the Czech Republic, why not see how that history is still being created today? 😉
After all, Czech glass is something you can look at, use, admire… and, unlike much of Czech beer, you can actually take it home with you. 😅🍷
