About this Tour

Dresden with its population over 500 000 is the second-largest (after Leipzig) city in the German state of Saxony and it is situated on a very south – close to the border with the Czech Republic, which makes it a perfect destination for day-tripping from Prague since it is only 150km away. Dresden lies in the broad basin of the Elbe river, one of the major waterways in Central Europe. It runs from the Czech Republic through Germany to the North Sea. Dresden was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, but the construction of a four-lane bridge across the river nearby the old town caused UNESCO to revoke the designation in 2009.

Dresden has a long history dating back to Neolithic era by Linear Pottery culture tribes 7500 BC and it is known by the end of the 12th century as the Slav village of “Drezdzany” – meaning “Forest Dwellers”. Due to the expansion of Germans to the east, it was colonized in the middle of the 13th century by Margrave Dietrich of Meissen. Since then, Dresden was in hand of various rulers including King of Bohemia and Margrave of Brandenburg, Wettin dynasty, Dukes of Saxony and Electors. After a disastrous fire in 1491, the city was rebuilt and fortified and in 1539 Dresden accepted the Protestant Reformation. In the late 17th and 18th century, the city is modernized in Baroque and Rococo style by both electors – Augustus I and Augustus II.

Before World War II, Dresden was called “Florence on the Elbe” and was considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities for its art treasures and architecture. However, by the end of the war, on the night of February 13th-14th in 1945, it was almost completely destroyed by massive bombing raids by US/UK forces where about 25 000 civilians lost their lives. After the end of the war and mainly after the reunion of both West and East Germany in 1990, most of the historical sites were rebuilt.

After meeting you up at 9am at your hotel in Prague, we’ll be driving you north, crossing the border to Germany and in about 1hour and 30minutes we will arrive to Dresden.

Once in Dresden, we’ll start our walking tour of this amazing town and our guide will take you through the most beautiful parts of it, giving you a lot of information from the history at the same time. We’ll be covering first the Church of our Lady – huge symbol of Dresden’s reincarnation, then we will walk through the historical Brühl’s Terrace for a fantastic view over the Elbe river, heading towards the Zwinger – former orangery, garden and representative festival area with some of the most important buildings of the Baroque period in Germany.

Just before exploring another place of interest – the Residence, you’ll get a chance to stop by one famous chocolate shop, get a coffee and perhaps try the best chocolate ice cream you ever had 😉 Roughly around 12:30 we’ll give you 2,5hours just for yourself so you can sit down to have a lunch and later maybe visit the Residence inside, Zwinger gallery or just to walk around and do a little shopping 😉 Approximately at 3pm we’ll meet on the main square and we’ll still have a time to take you to the north part of Dresden across the river, to see an interesting art passage of decorated courtyards.

We will depart from Dresden at around 4pm, so you will be back to your hotel at Prague at around 6pm… we believe happy and full of remarkable memories 😉

Please note that we are very flexible as with every of our tours. This is just the suggested itinerary from our side and all the sites listed are pretty optional, so for example if you don’t want to visit the XXX… it is absolutely fine 😉 Or maybe you’re not interested in a coffee stop or you would like to have something else for your lunch… fine too 😉 …we have always plan B, C or D in our pocket 🙂 You might be also interested to see some sites not mentioned here which is also fine as this is your day, you are on a private tour and we will always do our best to accommodate all your wishes – unless they’re unrealistic 🙂
